Love Fell Out With Me - Choreography by Bob Boross

Presented at the University of California, Irvine, February 2003. Originally presented in a less extravagant form at Western Kentucky University in 1998.

I had a wonderful CD of standards sung by Sammy Davis Jr, and always thought that there was a dance in this compilation. I was able to fashion a story that drew from the movie musicals of the 1940s and 1950s, and also the Rat Pack era of Sammy Davis. In the piece, the three swingin' guys think that they are out to score with '"chicks" in Lotta' Livin' to Do. However, the pair off with different '50s pinup types - Eleanor Powell and her Hawaiian look mixed with two Jack Cole styled tigressses in Begin the Beguine. Then the young, lesser experienced kid meets his match with sassy twins in Too Close for Comfort. Finally, the lead guy, who has the Gene Kelly American in Paris look, meets his match with a Cyd Charisse vamp, and they battle to a draw in Love Me or Leave Me.

The piece concludes with Love Fell Out With Me, when the guys regroup to retell their tales of failed conquest. The pin ups all materialize, and then put the guys in their place once and for all. As we all know, in matters of love, the female is victor.
